Dana has already learned that love isn’t safe . . . but could it be different in Rock Harbor?
As a 911 dispatcher, Dana Newell takes pride in being calm in tough circumstances. In addition to her emotionally-charged career, she’s faced enough emergencies in her own life. She recently escaped her abusive fiancé to move to tranquil Rock Harbor where she hopes life will be more peaceful.
But the idyllic town hides more danger and secrets than it first appeared. Dana is continually drawn to her new friend Boone, who has scars inside and out. Then she answers a call at her job only to hear a friend’s desperate screams on the other end. Soon the pain in her past collides with the mysteries of her new home—and threatens to keep her from the future she’s always wanted.

Beneath Copper Falls by Colleen Coble was just riveting with a capital R!! OK, the references to Phantom of the Opera and fan-favorite, The Princess Bride doesn't hurt either. However, I also think even without those references, this book is sublime as it comes to suspense. Add a good dose of inspirational context in the message, it had me turning the pages in record speed.
"We are not told to decide who or who will not benefit from the words that point to life. We are just to be faithful with our lives and our words. If the Holy Spirit prompts you, then be faithful to what he has told you." (157)
The message of faith and trust amidst tragedy is strong, but there's a certain tenderness the author displays when it comes to our character's internal struggles with their emotional as well as physical scars.
"The scars don't define you. Who you really are inside is what matters." (144)
I haven't read any of the Rock Harbor novels in the past. I came on Colleen Coble's band wagon much too late. If the others are anything like Beneath the Falls, I'm in for sure. I didn't think I missed anything when reading this installment, so definitely doable as a standalone piece. I would love to read further about the other characters I've met in this one, especially Bree and Kade's story.
When it came to suspense, it's deep and well twisted in the plot to not give away too many clues. I did think of the possibility of the culprit, but deep down, I was hoping this person wasn't it. Though it didn't come on as a surprise, I did stare in disbelief at the outcome of one character (spoiler - hightlight to see) that died. Then there's this. I started this story late in the evening, and I wished I didn't. Possibly because I had quite the scary dream (quite similar to the storyline) afterwards. Yes, you've been warned. I think for a suspense novel that had such an impact, that is quite a thrill.
In all, Beneath Copper Falls lives up to its genre, great suspense, but also add in such profound insight in its message, it's for sure a must read. Then we can't negate the romantic thread associated with it, can we? With lines that links The Princess Bride and Phantom of the Opera, I think not.
(Regarding Phantom of the Opera)
". . . but I just love the way it portrays love as lasting a lifetime. Both men loved Christine all their lives, but one with an obsession and the other with a love that wanted what was best for her. . . I want to make sure I know the difference." (83)
I do want to leave this final quote with you, because it's a reminder I don't ever want to forget.
"We are far from helpless. God hears all prayer, even silent ones. It is the biggest power we have. . ." (158) (2 Timothy 1:7)
