ABOUT THE BOOK

Planning and Post-It notes are the epitome of Evie’s life. But when she meets Jack, her life gets more than a little complicated.

Thirteen years ago, Evie's firefighterhusband was killed in the line of duty, leaving her to raise their young son, Cody, alone. Now, Cody is marrying the love of his life, and as he packs up his belongings, the house feels as empty as Evie's heart. But for all her planning and mad organizational skills, Evie could never have anticipated the dramatic shift her life is about to make.

Tattooed, rough-around-the-edgesJack raises quite a few eyebrows in the tight-knit community of Banister Falls. Where Evie's life is stream-lined, Jack's approach to living is moment-by-moment. But as Evie gets drawn into Jack's world—a world that isn't as safe or predictable as the one she's worked so hard to create—he challenges her to open her eyes to the problems outside the walls of the church.

Jack doesn't make Evie feel comfortable, but he definitely makes her feel something. Something she hasn't felt since Max passed away—or, maybe ever. Because even though Jack isn't anything like her late husband, he just might be everything she needs.

MY THOUGHTS

What is it about a bad boy? Like cowboys, there's just something about a bad boy that just holds onto one's heart? Well, if that bad boy has a heart of gold and a servant attitude like Jack in The Hearts We Mend, by Kathryn Springer, I'd say take that chance, and go for it. And speaking of chance, that's what this is about. It's about taking the chance that God gave you, and trusting Him with all.

" 'God...I need Your help, I'm afraid of everything. Loving. Losing. Making mistakes. Not making them. I don't know what to let go of...and what to keep'... Because that's what it always came down to - an act of the will.  Evie believed God could heal the past.  She believed in heaven. But was she going to trust God with all the moments in between?" (242)

Having lived a shelter life, Evie is surrounded with family and friends that loves and protects her as best as they can.  While Jack, from a totally different lifestyle, with danger that lurks through his family and neighborhood, lives by the moment for others. Together, they find what the other is missing, and learn to see the world differently, as a whole.  Jack is a witness of service as he serves those who need guidance, a friend, a meal or just a place to crash. His heart of gold shows off God's grace abundantly. Evie, a loving mother and a caring friend held herself back for those she loves. Maybe together with Jack, she's finally able to let loose and be who she and God wants her to be from now on. I must also add Lily. She's the cutie of the story!

"Every adventure starts with one step." (101)
"The storm rumbled on, the mountains of cumulus clouds dissolving into a glorious crimson sunset.  Jack loved it when God showed off." (168)

A beautiful story of family, love and trusting God to find growth. One not to miss!
"You have to get on your knees...Get your hands into the soil and work it. Sweat a little in the tending and weeding...and then you'll see things grow." (138)
